Raffle Winner's visit to Pensthorpe Park

Bearded Tit

On one of the hottest days of the year we decided to redeem our raffle prize tickets and visit Pensthorpe Natural Park, set in the heart of the Wensum Valley, North Norfolk. Although it was peak holiday time and there were lots of visitors, it was not long before we were strolling quiet paths over bridges and walkways, around pools and lakes, listening only to the sound of rustling leaves and humming insects.

We had visited the park several times before, but had never explored the length of the old railway line, so this was our plan for the day, however the heat sent us back several times to relax in the leafy café courtyard for welcome refreshment. When we did set off on our trek we found ourselves under shady trees in such solitude that a hare ran along in front of us.

With the aid of the map we found an interesting way back via further expanses of water, always in the company of bees, butterflies, dragon- and damsel flies. We ended our visit at the beautiful Millennium Garden where the designer has made clever use of tall flowering plants to create a patchwork of subtle colour and texture. We were lucky enough to chat to a gardener who told us his occupation of propagating plants was also his hobby – a happy man.

Pensthorpe is a good place to explore at any time of year, even during a heatwave! Many thanks for organising such an imaginative prize.
