Friends Annual Fundraising Event: Life on the Edge

Friends Annual Fundraising Event: Life on the Edge

Our latest fund raising event on 21 April was a most successful illustrated talk by Richard Porter on the birds, mammals, plants, butterflies and insects that live and survive the challenging environment on Blakeney Point, where life is most definitely “On the Edge”.

Richard is a well known ornithologist and author, having worked for many years with RSPB. He currently advises Bird life International on their Middle East programme, specialising in Yemen and Socotra (an isolated archipelago belonging to Yemen, off the Horn of Africa). He is also adviser to Nature Iraq on its conservation projects and assists with training their staff.

An audience of 55 at Aylmerton Village Hall were amazed at his encyclopaedic knowledge, gained from his association with the Point stretching back over 50 years. His accompanying photographs were absolutely stunning.

During the interval everyone enjoyed a finger buffet, wine and soft drinks and the Blakeney themed raffle proved to be very popular.

The star raffle prize was a trip for four people, who will be taken out by boat to the Point, where Richard Porter will introduce them to the National Trust Wardens over seeing the Little Tern breeding season, a guided tour of the Point, rounded off with a picnic hamper lunch. Richard’s wife, Julia, kindly drew the raffle and the star prize was won by Jim Dumolo (ticket number 915 – Jim just happens to be the person who has responsibility for the fabric of St John’s!).

The other winners were:-
Candida Mottershead (237)
Olga Richardson (97)
Laura Carr (47)
Judith Carter (159)
Peter P (567)
Norman Couchman (55)
Sophie Streeting (142)
Joe Woodcock (108)
Liz Crane (181)
Peter Fisher (640)
Moira Poole (197)
Joyce Hurwood (417)

Thanks to everyone who made the evening such a resounding success and particular thanks to Patsy and Lesley for the extra special catering which was enjoyed by all. Our thanks also to people who couldn’t come, but supported the event by buying raffle tickets.

The evening raised an amazing profit of £852!
